20 years ago, Batman: The Animated Series premiered on Fox. Originally intended to capitalize on the immense popularity of the 1989 and 1992 Tim Burton films, the series quickly became a classic in its own right, going on to win four Emmy awards: Outstanding Animated Program, Outstanding Writing in an Animated Program, Outstanding Music Direction and Composition and Outstanding Sound Editing.
The series would also lay the groundwork for the shared setting that would eventually become known as the DC Animated Universe.
Personally, some of my fondest memories of this show are of the brilliant title cards. Title cards have become something of a lost art, and I’ve always felt they fit very well with Batman- they hearken back to the serials and radio programs of the 1940’s, a period I’ve always felt Batman works best in.
