Duel with Wiegraf
"All such tales of gods and their miracles are false. Those who would lead prefer that history suit their needs, and rewrite it to see that it does. And why shouldn’t they? The fault lies not with them. The reeking masses yearn for gods and miracles. It is their opiate, and they consume it greedily. The people do not endeavor towards greatness, but rather mire themselves in their petty strifes - shackles on the feet of man. Their leaders give them no more than that for which they clamor. It is history’s oldest and most oft-repeated tale. Do men exploit this weakness to dominate their fellows? Mayhap they do. But they succeed only because the people are eager to know such dominion. Gods are only illusions born of man’s fear. It is they who see this charade for what it is and join in the pageantry who are to blame."
For many FFT fans, this was the battle they fought more than any other. At this point, you know you’re going to have to face Velius, but before you’re even allowed to do so, you must win a duel with Wiegraf.
Though maybe “win” is too strong a word. “Survive” is better, perhaps. Boasting the very powerful Lightning Stab (Hallowed Bolt) Holy Sword skill, Counter, and enough speed and range to keep you from effectively running away, this fight with Wiegraf can be monstrously difficult, but only if you go in unprepared. If you take measures to increase Ramza’s speed, you can defeat Wiegraf before he even has a chance to move, and if you have Auto Potion or Regenerator, you might even get back some of the HP he’ll try to take from you.
From a story standpoint, this is where we see that sealing a pact with a Zodiac Stone strips you of your soul. The Wiegraf Folles we knew, the one who fought bitterly against class division in Ivalice and sought justice for his late sister, is gone, his body now little more than a mortal vessel for Velius.
Even if you win, this battle is only the beginning.
